SHM technology integrates remote sensing, smart materials, and computer based knowledge systems to allow engineers see how built up structures are performing over time. This chapter deals with the study of composite vibration, which may be used for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications.

It is shown that the axial and flexural vibrations of anisotropic composite plates are fully coupled, which is substantially different from the case of isotropic metallic plates in which the axial and flexural vibrations are decoupled and can be studied independently.

Structural health monitoring assesses the state of structural health and, through appropriate data processing and interpretation, may predict the remaining life of the structure. Many aerospace and civil infrastructure systems are at or beyond their design life; however, it is envisioned that they will remain in service for an extended period.

Structural health monitoring and inspection methods allow early detection of damage or degradation to critical components, enabling corrective action can be taken so vehicle components can safely and economically perform their intended function.
